Alaska Sea Duck hunting Species We Hunt
King Eider Sea ducks
Drake King Eider Sea Ducks (Somateria spectabilis) are regal
in appearance and average 23 inches in length. They are identified
from other male eider Sea ducks by the red bill and large orange
frontal lobe extending from the bill up to the forehead. This
lobe is outlined in black which sets off the pale blue-gray top
half of the head and sea-green shaded cheeks. While the king eider
has a white chest like the common eider, kings have black backs.
We allow each hunter to take 2 Alaska Drake King Eider Sea ducks
per hunt.

Weather at Island X
The weather in this part of Alaska is unpredictable and during
the winter Alaska sea duck season it can vary from freezing rain
to high winds. During January the average daily temperatures
range from 15-30 degrees with a few real nice days reaching the
mid 30's. So everyone should pack and dress accordingly in layers
of Polar fleece with a good rain and wind shell as the outer layer. All
Alaska Sea duck hunters should be prepared mentally and physically
to hunt in any weather conditions from -20 to +40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Expect it to be windy as the average year round wind blows 12-15mph
on island X at the airport during the Sea duck season in January.
But this doesn't slow us down as we have gotten used to it
and made adjustments in our King Eider & Harlequin Sea duck hunting
techniques.
Please be aware that unexpected storms can move through this
area and occasionaly will make our Sea duck hunting grounds
unsafe due to large waves and extreme tidal currents this will
cause us to cancel daily hunting trips.
Remember all of our camps are remote
wilderness camps, only accessible by a 2 1/2 hour plane
ride from Anchorage. When you arrive at camp, you
will be met by the head guide and escorted to your
room and shown around camp.
